The Apocalypse

I’ve had a lot of things on my mind recently regarding the apocalypse…

A topic that I have been obsessed with for as long as I can remember.

Feeling blue? Watch an apocalyptic themed movie. Feeling excited? Zombies. Feeling scared? Distract yourself with a book on war with aliens. The topic brings me many types of relief and stress all at the same time.

If I were to dive deeper into my obsession, it would probably stem from the feeling like I had absolutely no control over anything in my life (which terrified me). Because of that I could watch and/ or read about these completely ludacris scenarios, study them intently… and feel prepared to know what to do in each situation.

But, something that I wasn’t prepared for was the reality that we are living in now. This type of apocalypse was never on my radar. The slow deception, spread of evil, and commonality of crazy is killing us.

To be able to watch in real time as people everywhere choose to value opinions over equality, spread judgment quicker than love, and lazily rationalize wrong before seeking truth, leads me to believe that the end can’t be that far off.

All this to say… it might not be zombies, but the divide that’s happening between all of us as human beings is being strengthened. And with that, comes times of struggle. History can show.

With times of trouble I have realized how important it is to be able to rely on yourself, and yourself only. As a mother of young children, that fact alone utterly consumes me. What if I don’t prepare enough? What if I can’t provide them with everything they need? What if in this ravenous world, they will be left to starve?

I can’t have it. And I won’t.

What I am thinking is… the craze and widespread popularity of building a “homestead” is in all reality incredibly smart. I, myself, have started my homesteading journey… It's not going well. No one talks about how building a self-sufficient, eco-conscious home system is honestly the equivalent to maintaining a full time job. A good homestead is obviously one built on a zero waste conceptualization. And to manage that? It’s freaking hard.

In a perfect world, your leftovers would go in your compost bin, then you would use your compost to build a beautiful garden, your collected rain run off would water said garden, you would thrive on a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables (and so would your chickens), your goat would have all the food it could ever want, you would be able to can food… building a food storage (for the apocalypse), and your green life would just be dandy and sweet.

In this world though, at least in mine… nothing ever goes according to plan. Our compost bin busted open. Our garden dried up and met a cruel end. Our apple tree got pruned a little too much and didn't sprout blossoms for two seasons. And we haven't even begun to think about building a system for catching water, or canning our non-existent harvest.

I realized that  if I were to train my obsessive tendencies to focus on building a sustainable self sufficient lifestyle then it might be going a little bit better for us. So I have recommitted myself to studying and implementing eco friendly, self sufficient (still apocalyptic preparation) homesteading techniques into my own home.

Here are some links to a few pages that I have found super helpful and encouraging;

I always hear that “anyone can do it” and I am hopeful that I can be that “anyone”. If you too are struggling in building a self-sufficient lifestyle that will benefit you and your family in every way, please let me know how it goes for you.

In a world that’s spiraling, this is something we can control with the freedoms and rights that not all those around the world have access to. I plan to take full advantage of it, and I hope you do too.

With love,

Imani
